Common Drywall Problems and How to Fix Them

Jan 11, 2024

Are you a big home DIYer, looking to repair your own drywall?

There are many common issues that appear in drywall over time as a result of wear and tear, poor installation, or environmental circumstances. Luckily, there are a lot of simple, straightforward ways to repair your existing drywall. Let's take a look at some of the common issues homeowners run into.

  1. Cracks: cracks are likely the most common drywall issue experienced by homeowners. These can occur for a variety of reasons, including temperature and moisture fluctuations, the settling of buildings, or poor insulation. Small cracks can be fixed by cleaning the area of all debris. You then apply a thin layer of joint compound over the crack, smooth it and allow it to sit and dry. This process is repeated until the crack is filled sufficiently, with sanding done in between each layer to ensure a smooth finish. Larger cracks may require the use of joint tape before applying any compound.
  2. Nail pops: nail pops are bumps or cracks that occur when drywall nails or screws push through the surface. These happen over time due to the natural expansion, contraction and settling of natural building materials. To fix nail pops, first remove the loose drywall around the area. Using a screwdriver or hammer, secure the nail or screw back into place, making sure it goes down just below the surface. Then apply joint compound over the area, feathering it out to blend with the surrounding wall. Allow to dry and repeat the process as many times as necessary.
  3. Water damage: water damage is a common issue in areas prone to leaks and high humidity levels, like bathrooms, basements, or kitchens. The first step is to fix the source of the water issue. Once the area has sufficiently dried, remove the damaged wall and replace with new material. The wooden framing may need repair as well, depending on the extent of the damage. After installing the drywall, apply joint compound, sand and paint to match the surrounding wall.
  4. Peeling and Cracked Paint: peeling paint on drywall can be caused by poor adhesion, moisture, or aging and can easily be corrected. If it is a moisture issue, this must be addressed first. Then remove any remaining loose debris and apply joint compound with a trowel or brush. Match the existing texture as closely as possible. Allow it to dry, then sand it to blend with the surrounding wall. Repeat the process as necessary.

Drywall problems are common and can easily be fixed with some patience and the right technique. Consulting your local drywall company is highly recommended to ensure your issue is handled professionally, so that your finished wall looks pristine and perfect!
